3.2.4 PIF

As pointed out in Section 1.1.1, PIF is the old native file format of various tools developed at the Institute for Microelectronics. Due to the strict bottom up design semantical constraints on the data were introduced at a time where many simulators where already integrated with the basic PIF libraries and had defined their own data model. As a consequence several, semantically incompatible, PIF versions emerged. Therefore only limited support for some variations of PIF is possible in the WAFER-STATE-SERVER. Since all of the newly developed simulators from the Institute for Microelectronics are already based on the WAFER-STATE-SERVER data format the limited support of PIF is not a relevant shortcoming.
