7 Modes of VMake

VMake has different modes of operation which can be selected by command line arguments. The two main modes are the batch and interactive evaluation mode. Invoking the help with the command line option longhelp returns a description of all command line options. The command line options to select the different modes of VMake are summarized in Table 7.1. The default mode is batch in compatibility to make and MMS.

Under VMS a `/' can be used instead of the UNIX `-' for the command line options. All command line options are case insensitive and may be given in lower or upper case to be compatible with VMS. Additional information is taken from the environment of VMake. All environment variables can be overridden by command line options. All used environment variables are shown in Table 7.2. The environment variable VLISPPATH is generic to the VLisp interpreter, all others are specific to VMake.

Under VMS an environment variable can be either defined as a logical or a symbol. Both cases are handled correctly by VMake.
