3.3.1 The PIF Editor

The PIF editor (PED, Figure 3.5) is the front-end user interface for the interactive creation and modification of geometrical data in two and three spatial dimensions and of attributes (like the material type) which define the device structures. The PED widget contains Canvas, Ruler, and PedGraph widgets and is implemented as a widget itself (see Figure 3.5).

The top-level execution control of the PED is based on an extensible and configurable automaton which filters all user input and triggers appropriate actions. A direct link to the task-level environment allows editing macros to be added easily.

Despite the advantages of a widget-oriented implementation, the scope and functionality of graphical interactive editing of device structures is considerable. This rather large module of VISTA will be part of another text.
