5.1 Mechanical Models

There are several possibilities for stress analysis coupled with oxidation processes. Unfortunately, it is a complex problem to model the evolving stress simultaneously with a moving interface boundary, which is normally handled by readaptation algorithms of the numerical simulation mesh. The usual procedure is to adopt an incremental approach solving the boundary displacements and mesh adaptation for a very small time step of the oxidation taking the existing stresses into account. Incremental stress analysis is then performed using the oxide interface displacements as boundary condition for the strain. Thereby, the stress analysis is cumulative: the total stress is the superposition of each incremental stress field depending on the detailed mechanical model.
