Technology computer-aided design (TCAD) tools are used in the semiconductor industry to assist in the development of integrated circuits at practically all stages. With continuing feature size reduction, the behavior of electronic devices is affected by quantum-mechanical short channel effects, such as tunneling through energy barriers and quantum interference effects. In this joint project with Global TCAD solutions, our goal is to develop the foundations for the next-generation TCAD device simulator. Available quantum transport models will be studied with respect to their physical accuracy, computational cost, numerical aspects, and their applicability in emerging technologies.
