PhD Student / Post-Doctoral Researcher

MBE Growth of Fluorides

The group of Prof. Grasser at the Institute for Microelectronics, TU Wien is focused on the stability and reliability of semiconductor devices. In addition to conventional Si transistors, transistors made of 2D materials have moved to the center of attention. One serious roadblock towards their commercialization is the lack of suitable insulators, see some of our recent papers [1], [2], [3]. We have recently pioneered the used of fluorides, in particular CaF2, as an insulator for 2D semiconductors, see [1 above].

To obtain the best material quality, CaF2 is typically grown using MBE. For this new position we are looking for highly talented and motivated young researchers to join the team with a background knowledge in the following areas:

  • MBE growth in general, ideally some experience with 2D materials
  • Experience with vacuum systems, ideally experience with UHV systems
  • Set-up and maintenance of an MBE system
  • Optionally, knowledge in the fabrication and working principles of semiconductor devices is an advantage

In addition to the available MBE system, which is used in various other projects, we are planning  to purchase  a dedicated MBE system for the growth of ultrathin layers of selected fluorides on various substrates.  We offer the opportunity to design a new, state-of-the-art MBE system, while in parallel working on the existing MBE system in close collaboration with a dynamic and growing research team focusing on the entire process chain from material growth to nanoelectronic device fabrication and characterization. The new research team member will drive the acquisition of the MBE system and assemble it in our lab space while being at the center of our research efforts to find suitable gate insulators for 2D material based nanoelectronics.

As a teaching institution, knowledge transfer and close cooperation with students are of fundamental importance. The applicant should enjoy working as a team member of a large research group, working together with students as well as supervising Bachelor and Master theses.
